정부ㆍ언론 외래어 심의 공동위원회는 국어에 새로 들어오는 외래어의 한글 표기를 심의하고자 1991년 9월 국립국어연구원(현 국립국어원)과 한국신문편집인협회(1996년 1월 23일 한국신문방송편집인협회로 개칭)가 공동으로 구성하였다. 부정기적으로 열어 오다가 1995년부터 격월로 개최하는 것을 원칙으로 하고 있다.
