Notes

The consonants are pretty straightforward. Note that the sound [x] is written /h/ and [pf] is simplified to /f/. The vowels are also straightforward, but note that the schwa [ə] is generally transcribed /e/ when spellt 'e'. To confuse matters further, the 'r' at the end of words or elements of compound words are transcribed /ə/.

 

When 'ng' comes before a vowel or 'l', transcribe as /ŋg/ even when the 'g' is not pronounced, e.g. Tübingen /tübiŋgen/, Spengler /špeŋglə/.

 

'Berg' and 'burg' are always transcribed /berk/ and /burk/ respectively, e.g. Heidelberg /haidelberk/, Hamburg /hamburk/.
